Over 800 arrested for electricity theft

JPS is reporting that the intensified effort to reduce the theft of electricity has resulted in the arrest of 833 persons with another 145 summonses being issued, as of December 4. This comes as a result of multiple operations which have been carried out across the island, since the start of the year.

The operations against the theft of electricity have included the removal of thousands of throw-ups and meter investigations, as well as a heightened focus on commercial customers, with audits being carried out in several town centres.

Since the start of the year, company personnel have removed 170,941 throw-ups - with over 63,000 of these coming from the Corporate Area alone. St Catherine and St Elizabeth followed with over 38,000 and 35,000 throw-ups being removed, respectively.

without payment

The energy company is also reporting that the introduction of specialised metering systems within communities have enabled crews to identify areas where electricity is being consumed without payment. The metering systems, which are being used at the pole-mounted transformer level, can identify the street and even the residence where illegal consumption is taking place. These meters which are presently being rolled out across the island are highly effective, and will be used more widely in the coming year.

JPS continues to remind persons who are not regularised to visit the nearest customer service office to make arrangements to do so, as the company is seeking to provide an energy solution for every Jamaican.
