Another acid attack

Andre' Williams, STAR Writer

Though there are reports to suggest that the practice of throwing acidic substances on unsuspecting persons has repeated itself in the Corporate Area in recent weeks, a senior policeman has said contending incidents are isolated.

These acts of violence, our news team was told, could not be regarded as prevalent, according to Head of St Andrew Central police division, Senior Superintendent Fitz Bailey.

He told THE STAR, "I think I'm aware of the attack. However, there is no information to suggest that it is prevalent. I couldn't use an isolated incident to say it was."

An investigation is currently under way into an attack that took place on November 19 inside an office located in a plaza in St Andrew.

Two persons were injured in that incident. THE STAR understands that the perpetrator may have been caught on surveillance camera running from the scene, but one of the victims is unsure of how the investigations have gone so far.

He told THE STAR, "I heard that the police had gone for the footage. I don't know what the police are doing, cause we nah hear from them. I'm still receiving treatment and the female is still hospitalised ... mi nuh know if dem hold nobody."

The male victim said his doctor told him the substance used appeared to have been alkaline. However, a report from the lab is pending.

He recounted the events of the day in question. "I was only having a conversation with her in the store when a man in a blue shirt appear and started throwing chemical from a canister all over her and I was caught also. I experienced a burning sensation immediately."

He continued, "She got it full, dose, from her head right down, hands, chest, face, back, right down to her heel. A just wickedness and mi nuh wish dat on nobody. Me have sister and a mother."

THE STAR was told that, during the chaos, police came on the scene and warning shots were fired during an unsuccessful attempt to catch the perpetrator.

THE STAR recently reported an attack of a similar nature in a neighbouring Kingston central police division.
