Prison warder resigns for sexual offence

Andre' Williams, STAR Writer

A Jamaican sex offender working in the Cayman Islands as a warder was forced to resign last Friday after it was revealed that he was convicted and deported from the US in 2009, for a sexual offence.

According to www.caymannewsservice.com, a prison officer who was placed on required leave last week as a result of revelations that he had a criminal conviction, which he had not declared, has resigned.

THE STAR understands the guard is Ricardo Fisher, a Jamaican who was convicted for a sexual offence in the US and deported.

Our news team understands Fisher is listed as a registered sex offender there, but did not reveal this conviction to HMP Northward, where he was working as a guard.

Fisher was facing charges after the prison concluded its investigation Friday. However, he opted to quit the post.

The prison released a statement on the weekend regarding Fisher's resignation, which took immediate effect.

However, no mention was made of how the guard slipped through the background clearance, or how he had obtained a police clearance certificate.

THE STAR also gathered that there has been no explanation about when Fisher was recruited or under what circumstances. Neither has there been an indication from the prison about efforts to tighten up its recruitment practice.

Citizens of the Cayman Islands have openly requested for him to be deported.

Fisher was listed on a US website which offers a quick and easy background search on any name, for a catalogue of possible offences or infractions. The site takes seconds to do the search.
