St Elizabeth fraudster gets a year in prison |

Launtia Cuff, Star Writer A St Elizabeth man was on Monday sentenced to one year in prison after he appeared in the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court for obtaining money by false pretence. In 2013, the court heard that Roger King, while impersonating a member of the Jamaica Defence Force, approached individuals telling them he was recruiting individuals for the army and that for a fee they could be admitted to the force. When these promises fell through, the matter was reported to the police and King was arrested and charged with two counts of obtaining money by false pretence. Checks revealed that King has three previous convictions for similar offences. Resident Magistrate Sonya Wint-Blair said that although he asked for leniency he would receive the maximum sentence of 12 months on each of the two counts. However, the sentences will run concurrently, so King will only serve one year in prison. |
