Campbell says strong start was key to half ton |

![]() File - John Campbell Young opener John Campbell has credited getting a good start as the primary reason behind his unbeaten half-century, which has put Jamaica Franchise in a strong position to beat the Leewards Hurricanes in their WICB four-day Professional League clash at Sabina Park. Campbell ended yesterday's third and penultimate day on 63, with him was David Bernard Jr on 33, as Jamaica, after being asked to get 195 for victory, closed the day on 160 for four, 35 runs in arrears. The Leewards made 103 in their first innings and 313 in their second, while Jamaica, in their first turn at bat, posted 222. "The coach has been stressing that we need to bat a lot of balls, so I just took my time, got a start, and gradually it got easier," said Campbell, who is playing in his first game of the season. The former West Indies Under-19 standout missed the first three rounds of the tournament due to a suspected case of chickungunya. "It was first between skipper Lambert and myself, and then David Bernard Jr, and as a result I think we are in a pretty good position," he added. The partnership between Campbell and Lambert was worth 72 and took the Jamaicans to relative safety after they struggled at 23 for three at one stage. Lambert fell five runs short of what would have been a deserved 50 when he was caught at point, while attempting a cut shot off the bowling of pace all-rounder Orlando Peters. Campbell's partnership with Bernard Jr, in the meanwhile, has so far produced 65 runs with the latter ending unbeaten on 33. "This is my first game coming back because I had chickungunya, and I think I batted well," said Campbell, who made one in the first innings. "I am now looking forward to tomorrow where the intention is to continue the game plan of getting back a start and continuing where I left off," expressed the 21-year-old. Play is scheduled to resume today at 10 a.m. |
