The public should desist from mob killing - police

The police are advising members of the public to desist from engaging in mob killings or vigilante justice, noting that such persons will be prosecuted for murder.

Head of the Crime portfolio, Deputy Commissioner Glenmore Hinds, says those involved are committing a serious offence and is encouraging citizens to report incidents of crime, so that they can be dealt with, in observance of the rule of law.

"If citizens decide to take justice in their own hands, resulting in the loss of lives, the police will treat it as murder and those responsible will be charged. Citizens must exercise their duty to report criminal acts to the police. We will not support vigilante justice," Hinds said in a release issued by the JCF's Corporate Communications Unit.

Mob justice threatens national security, peace and stability. As such, the police urge citizens to respect human rights as well as to obey the law.

The police are advising the public to utilise the 119 emergency number, Crime Stop 311 or the nearest police station to make reports or give any information to the police about criminals.
