No bail for woman allegedly caught with cocaine in underwear

Ladies underwear and a brassiere containing 12 pounds of cocaine resulted in a woman being hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Charged with possession of, dealing in, taking steps preparatory to export and conspiracy to export cocaine is Setpha Chay-Jarrett.

The Crown alleges, that on November 30, about 8:45 a.m., the accused checked in to board a Caribbean Airlines flight to Canada when upon reaching the pre-boarding area, she refused to be searched.

She was then escorted by police to a search room at the Norman Manley International Airport where she reportedly confessed to authorities that she had narcotics in her possession. Five rectangular parcels tucked in a girdle she had on and two circular-shaped parcels in her brassiere were found.

In court, the woman's defence attorney was unsuccessful in securing bail for her, despite claiming that she has an ailment.

"I am not granting her bail. Twelve pounds is a magnificent amount of cocaine. A diabetic stuffs 12 pounds of cocaine in her brassiere, you have to deal with your consequences," said Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.

Chay-Jarrett is to return to the court on Wednesday, when the matter will be mentioned.
