VERE Technical High's female athletes were the toast of the seventh staging of the Wolmer's Road Race and Relay which was held last Sunday at Heroes Circle. The John Mair-coached team dominated both the 5K and relay events. Fresh off her victory at the Hugo Chambers 5K event a few weeks ago, young Britney Dixon was again in winning form. She was the first female to finish, covering the course in 19 minutes 34 seconds. Second was UWI CB 5K winner, Danielle James of G.C. Foster College in 19:49 with third going to Digicel Downtown winner, Crystal Brown of Mavis Bank in 19:50. There was keen competition between the trio of Kirk Brown, Dwayne Graham of Seek Exercise Book and Oshane Archibald of G.C. Foster College with the lead changing on several occasions in the men's division. Late in the race, Brown , the defending champion and winner of the September 13 Gleaner 180 Anniversary 5K event, used his experience to good effect as he kicked away from his rivals in the last 300 metres to win in 15:47. His training partner Graham was second in 15:52, with third going to Archibald in 15:57. Earlier, Vere's quartet of Dixon, Kaycean Plummer, Sasha Gaye Whyte and Aleitha Fearon triumphed convincingly in the relay in 11:55.74. Among the male teams, favourites G.C. Foster College, had to fight all the way to stave off the challenges of two Kingston College teams and Mico University. G.C. Foster won in 9:04.33, as Kingston College's 'A' took second in 9:15.93 with their 'B' team, edging out Mico for third in 9:30.50. - R.G.
