WTF: Wha tek Ferguson! |
|||||
![]() ![]() AP - Demonstrators stage a mock shooting during a protest in front of the Buzz Westfall Justice Center in Clayton, Mo., yesterday, the day after a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer in the killing of unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown. Right about now, when I penetrate the big news of the day, my little brain starts screaming 'WTF!', yeah, man, WTF? Oh, but look here nuh, I remember the bangarang and brouhaha that erupted among the gatekeepers of Jamaican morality when the goodly Mayor of Kingston tweeted those three little letters, so let me hasten to explain that I'm not aiming to be profane. No peeps, my mouth is clean. Clean like a whistle! And by the way, why people always assume that whistles are clean? What happen if somebody with a dirty mouth does a blow job on it? Can we still say 'clean like a whistle?' Anyway, I digress! When I say WTF, I'm not indulging in the colourful art of bad-wud-cussing, because the 'F' word in my mental shout happens to have more than four letters! When I say WTF, I'm actually asking everybody, anybody and nobody in particular 'wha tek Ferguson?' And again, I have to quickly clarify that when I say Ferguson, I'm not referring to Jamaica's Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson. Of course, I was sort of wondering what tek him as well, yes, after he basically bungled the whole national chik-V response episode and then topped off the absurdity with a public wish to be infected with the disease. But he has already been reviled and ridiculed aplenty, so I'm not giving anymore airtime to our handsome Uncle Fenty. No man, the F word in my head now is Ferguson the place. Unnu must hear about that place by now, Ferguson, the city in St Louis County, in the state of Missouri, United States. That city has been a hotbed of civil unrest since August 9 this year when Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year old black male was killed after an altercation with a white police officer. Autopsies found that the young man had been shot at least six times. The incident immediately ignited protest action that has been basically ongoing at various levels since then. And it got worse yesterday. Yes, folks, the anger 'tun up' to an even higher level yesterday. And it seems like the whole city a 'tun over' today. Why? Well, because there's no justice. At least that's how I see it, after a grand jury of nine whites and three blacks met on 25 separate days over a three-month period and listened to over 70 hours of testimony from approximately 60 witnesses and decided that there was no probable cause to indict the police officer involved in the shooting. As the anger increases, the family of the victim is calling for calm and peace, but many people not listening. Peace? A piece of what, and peace for whom? Not Ferguson! It's pure anger a tek di city now. The people in Ferguson are probably mentally chanting the words famously sung by revolutionary reggae icon the late Peter Tosh who said: 'I don't want no peace, I need equal rights and justice!' The city is imploding. Police are on high alert, and the US National Guard is bracing for more protest in Ferguson. And as I view the excitement on TV and read the reports online I remember the famous LA riots as well, and I say to myself, as bad as things are we have never had these levels of protest over police action in Jamaica. Yes, our police kill plenty unarmed youths. But this kind of intense and serious protest never happen in Jamdung because, well, WTF! Yeah, man, and I'm still not cursing. I'm just saying, we don't protest so rough because WTF. We Too Fraid! box-mi-back@hotmail.com |
