Pashon Minott defeats Gaza Sheba in clash

CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer

The STAR and Magnum produced All-Star Face-Off sound clash competition continued last Thursday, with three entertaining clashes. The first musical battle of the night saw Gaza Sheba going up against reggae artiste and daughter of the late Sugar Minott, Pashon Minott.

Pashon Minott having lost the coin toss, was sent in to play first, and supported by DJ Deeki, she started her juggling with reggae. Uplifting songs from Capleton, Chronixx and Bugle made the cut as she tried to keep her selections classy.

"Don't mek mi petty face fool yu," she bellowed and went for some hardcore selections from Vybz Kartel such as Badda, Box Lunch and Nuh Play With Fire. The audience seemed to appreciate the selections, however, their response was relatively tame.

Gaza Sheba, having seen that Pashon had played songs from her former boss Vybz Kartel, warned of the repercussions.

"Yu think yu can use my boss kill mi," she said and played Vybz Kartel's My Scheme, receiving a roaring response from the audience. She also followed up with Tell Dem by Aidonia and Demarco's Duppy Know Who Fi Frighten.

bagga chatting

Gaza Sheba also dabbled in hip hop, with singles from Wiz Khalifa and The Wizard. Oozing with confidence, she informed Pashon that she stood no chance.

"Mi just a guh easy and kill har. No bagga chatting inna di war ... Dats why di man nah mine him pickney dem wid yu," she said and played Hold Dem by Alkaline.

At the end of the round, the judges unanimously chose Gaza Sheba as the victor. She even won bonus points for crowd response.

The jab at her children did not seem to go down well with Pashon Minott and for the 45 round, patrons were exposed to a fiercer contender.

"Rasta neva dies, rasta cyah dead, fom Kartel gone a jail she pop dung and mawga," Pashon said starting her 45 round with Sizzla's Solid As a Rock. For this song she received her first major crowd response and she was not prepared to lose that grip of the audience.

audience responded

"Yu see my fada a him set this. So mi cyah come ya and nuh play a Sugar Minott," she then played Tune In by Sugar Minott and Bounty Killer. Again the audience responded well. She then turned the fans against Gaza Sheba by drawing light to the many Gaza sex scandals.

"A one ting guh to mi mouth and a mi spliff," she said and played Mr DC, patrons knocking the front of the stage with Magnum bottles to show their support.Pashon Minott also amplified her stage performance with a Dutty Wine dance display, spinning her locks in a circular motion. The audience loved the display.

Gaza Sheba responded "She come pan stage and a Dutty Wine? A nuh Rasta dat a dutty Rasta". She then played Action Speak by Bounty Killer and received a relatively weak response. "Bout she come a talk bout false hair," she said and played another Bounty Killer. However, the audience reacted poorly. She concluded the round with less fanfare than her juggling round.

The judges said they loved how Pashon Minott defended herself. She therefore won the round as well as the crowd response.

Minott dominated the dub-for-dub round. Her first dub captured the audience's attention, again she took aim at freaks and played Capleton's Slew Dem. Gaza Sheba responded with Dwayneo's Don A Road, but some patrons booed the selection.

strong note

Pashon Minott responded and played a lethal dubplate from the late John Holt. The audience rewarded her handsomely.

Gaza Sheba played a Barrigtion Levy dub plate. However, the audience again showed her the cold shoulder. Pashon Minott then wrapped up her round on a strong note.

"Wi start with Rasta and wi a end withRasta," she said and played a strong medley from Capleton.

A seemingly wounded Gaza Sheba saved her best Vybz Kartel dub plate for last. However, there was no coming back from the beat down.

Both women hugged and shared photos at the end of the clash. Sheba ended with 35 points and Pashon ended with 45 points.

The celebrity clash this Thursday will see Jenny Jenny vs DJ Naz, while The Uncontainables will play Fire Links in the sound clash. Overseas viewers can see the clashes live each Thursday at www.jamaica-star.com. You can see the report on Miss Kitty's performance later this week.
