A Clarendon businessman is taking his colleagues to task over what he described as their nonchalant response to crime in the parish.

This comes on the heels of two incidents last week which left a mother and her two sons dead, as well as three other persons nursing injuries.

Last Monday, 44-year-old fish vendor Kareen Brown and her two sons, Shawn Mitchell, 21, and Shavion Mitchell, 17, were shot dead at the their home in Bucknor, May Pen. Later that day, there was another shooting on Stork Street which left three people injured.

The recent incidents are cause for concern for the business community in the parish, which has seen a 32 per cent decline in serious crimes since the start of the year.

However, May Pen businessman Michael McLaren says the business community in the parish is not proactive. He says most members of the community are only responsive when their businesses are directly affected by crime.

Meanwhile, McLaren says the town's closed circuit surveillance cameras need to be upgraded to help in the fight against crime. He says many of the cameras are old and may not be as effective in providing footage for the police.

He also wants the police to increase their patrol of the busy business district, especiallya long Stork Street where he says operators have been complaining about an increase in criminal activities.
