Come foward - Police appeal to citizens with information about crimes |
The police are appealing to persons who may have witnessed, been victims of, or who have evidence of any criminal activities to come forward.
The appeal follows the review of several cases by the Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) during its weekly case conference sessions with various police divisions, formations and other stakeholders. While citizens, out of fear and other reasons, may not come forward and report the witnessing of a crime, Deputy Commissioner Glenmore Hinds highlighted the importance of galvanising the support of citizens in the investigative process. "It is notable that many do not come forward because of fear for their lives and the lives of family members. However, as a society, we need to take the bold stance to ensure that the rule of law is strictly adhered to and utilise the services available that guarantees the safety of witnesses," he said. Hinds said investigators have been revisiting several cases and have established linkages to current crimes being committed. He said police have the capacity to treat reports with confidentiality, in an effort to ensure the lives of witnesses and their families are safeguarded. "There are many cases which have been going for years and we have been making some strong associations between recent crimes and crimes in the distant past. One of our challenges is witness testimonials," said Hinds. The police are reminding citizens to play their civic duty in creating a safer Jamaica and taking a tough stance against criminality by contacting the CIB headquarters at 922-4487, 922-7855-9, Crime Stop 311, police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station. |
