Psychiatric evaluation for alleged baby killer

Launta Cuff, Star Writer

A woman accused of killing her 11-month-old baby was deemed unfit to plead when she appeared before the St Elizabeth Circuit Court on Monday.

Shankia McKellar, 24, is charged with murder following the stabbing death of her 11-month-old daughter, Sabrina Joseph, in Lewis Town, Black River, St Elizabeth, in February last year.

McKellar was taken into custody on February 19, 2013, following police investigations into the death of the child.

While in custody, it is reported that McKellar made several suicide attempts. A psychiatric evaluation had been ordered. In court Monday it was revealed that the psychiatric evaluation had discovered her to be unfit to plead.

McKellar, who is on bail and is receiving treatment, had her matter set for mention in the next sitting of the St Elizabeth Circuit Court to commence in February 2015. At that time, her progress will be evaluated and a decision made on how to proceed with the matter.
