Chain thief gets two years |
|||||
![]() Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter A man accused of stealing a 9-carat gold chain was sentenced to two years' imprisonment when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Charged with simple larceny is 19-year-old Mark Fearon, who pleaded guilty to the offence. Allegations are that on the day of the incident, Fearon approached the female complainant, and proceeded to snatch the item of jewellery from around her neck. So forceful was the accused man in grabbing the chain, he is alleged to have torn her blouse in the process. In court, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey inquired into the matter. "What did he destroy for you?" RM Pusey asked the complainant. "A chain, and he tore my blouse, Your Honour," she replied. "How many times you get into trouble my friend?" RM Pusey asked Fearon. Fearon remained mum for an extended period, as the sitting magistrate waited for a response. He eventually responded with a barely audible "two time". "Any reason why you shouldn't go to prison for this?" RM Pusey further inquired. The accused man stood with a blank glare, failing to respond to any of the judge's inquiries. "Listen, man, we nuh have the whole day!" RM Pusey admonished. Subsequently, Fearon was sentenced to two years in prison for the offence. Fearon, who appeared stunned upon hearing the ruling, was quickly whisked away into custody by police personnel. |
