Portmore stun Boys' Town in FLOW Cup

MARC STAMP, STAR Writer

Ten-man Portmore United surprised Boys' Town 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out decider in the FLOW Champions Cup Knockout Competition at Collie Smith Drive in Trench Town yesterday.

Following regulation and extra-time the game finished in an exciting 2-2 draw and had to be decided by penalty kicks. Javon East silenced the partisan crowd when he netted past Boys' Town veteran goalkeeper Kirk Porter in the 5th minute. Boys' Town equalised when Rafiek Thomas scored from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

The goal sent the game into extra-time where Boys' Town took the lead in the first minute when substitute Chavaney Willis scored a beautiful strike from 35 yards that gave goalkeeper Donan Atkinson no chance. However, Portmore fought back and cancelled from a shot by Ewan Grandison in the 115th minute.

East was showed a second yellow card and ejected by FIFA referee Courtney Campbell late in extra-time. Also advancing to the FLOW Champions Cup last four were Reno and Harbour View. Reno clipped Sporting Central 1-0 at Juici Park in Clarendon, while Harbour View edged Highgate United 2-1 at St Mary Sports Complex.

The fourth and final semi-finalists will be known following a rescheduled game between Montego Bay United and Tivoli Gardens that was originally set for Wednesday at WesPow Park in Montego Bay.

Tivoli requested and was granted a postponement by the Professional Football Association of Jamaica due to the squad being seriously affected by the widespread chikungunya virus.

At Collie Smith Complex, spectators were treated to an exciting and dramatic contest. Both teams were guilty of squandering some clear-cut chances. However, Portmore United, who were relegated from the Red Stripe Premier League last season, to the St Catherine Major League, held their nerves and scored all five penalty kicks.
