Pressure on Schäfer for Caribbean Cup

National coach Schäfer

The results of next month's Caribbean Cup could go a long way in deciding the future of Reggae Boyz head coach Winifred Schäfer, with Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) President Horace Burrell refusing to consider failure as an option.

Among the major considerations for failing to emerge as regional kingpins at the November 10th-18th competition are missing out on the region's prestigious Gold Cup for a second straight edition. But perhaps even more significant is missing out on an automatic berth to the Centennial Copa America in 2016, a tournament that expected to pay US$1,000,000 for qualifiers.

"We expect to do very well in the Caribbean tournament, and that is all I am thinking about, winning the tournament, and that is all," Burrell said.

"I am looking forward in a positive way. I am looking forward to the 2016 Centennial Copa America. I am looking at the Gold Cup, and I am not looking at anything else. I am thinking only about winning."

Negative results

The German coach has increasingly come under pressure following a string of negative results, the latest is a one-sided 1-0 defeat at the hands of World Cup qualifiers Japan last Friday. However, in-between, the Reggae Boyz have lost to Canada, Switzerland, Serbia, and, most notably, 8-0 to France.

Since taking charge of the team on July 13 of last year, Schäfer has led the team on eight occasions, registering two wins, three losses and three draws for an unimpressive 25 percent win ratio. Jamaica Football Federation boss captain Horace Burrell has remained firmly in the corner of the national coach, as he believes the run of fixtures has been a difficult one.

"These have been high-profile internationals against teams that are more developed. A team like Japan is way ahead of Jamaica, not in terms of talent, but in terms of resources to properly prepare," he said.
