Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A St Catherine man who stole a Jamaica Urban Transit Company Smart Card in a bid to pay lesser fare was fined $100,000 or 30 days imprisonment.

He is Marcus Atkins, 35, of Portmore, St Catherine.

When the accused appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the penalty was handed down by Resident Magistrate Lyle Armstrong.

The court heard that on the day in question, the accused boarded a JUTC bus. He presented a Smart Card, and when the card was swiped, the operator realised that it belonged to a child.

The police was called in, and following an investigation, Atkins was charged with fraud.
