George's hammer Campion 11-1

Robert Bailey, Star Writer

Former champions St George's College barely broke a sweat on their way to thrashing Campion College 11-1 in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Manning Cup Group A encounter, at Winchester Park yesterday.

In the group's other game, Kingston College (KC) defeated Jose Marti 1-0. However, St George's leads the group with six points, based on a superior goal difference ahead of KC. They are followed by Waterford and Jose Marti, who are both locked on three points respectively, Campion are at the bottom of the table on zero.

St George's, who last won the title in 2012, were led to their effortless victory courtesy of a hat-trick each from national Under-17 strikers Alex Marshall and Shevon Stewart.

The speedy, but skilful striker Marshall netted his goals for the light blues in the 35th, 58th and 67th minutes, as St George's cruised to a 7-0 lead by half-time. Stewart, who proved too much for Campion's defenders, with his swift dribbling skills and clever off the ball movements, scored his hat-trick in the fourth, 26th and 40th minutes.

Gregory Messam (19th and 22nd), substitute Damini Harris (64th and 75th) and Amoy Brown (34th), were the other scorers for the Neville 'Bertis' Bell-coached St George's. Jervaze Green scored the consolation goal for Campion in the 71st minute. St George's assistant coach Marcel Gayle was happy with his team's performance.

"It was a workman-like performance from my team and so credit to them because we scored eleven goals and you can't ask for more from them," said Gayle.

"However, unfortunately we gave up a soft goal, but that's just football because when you are leading you tend to lose concentration, but I hope that won't be a factor going forward," he said.

Garfield Nesbeth, coach of Campion, was somewhat disappointed with his team's performance. "With everything there is always good and bad and sometimes a defeat like this is what you need to wake up," said Nesbeth.
