OMAR Walker said the sharp turns at Assiniboia Downs (ASD) in Winnipeg, Canada, improved his ground-saving skills, which saw him winning 26 races before returning to Jamaica last week.
The four-time Jamaican champion jockey said his experience was a good one as it was his first stint riding overseas. "The experience was okay. The track was a little small and the turns sharp. The one thing I learned was how to save ground, because the turns are sharp," he said, describing the six-and-a-half furlong dirt track. Walker cut short his stay at ASD after owners who supported him lost their horses in claiming races. Others, he said, had moved their animals to Edmonton's Northlands Park with ASD season of live racing set to end later this month. jockeys' standings He spent close to four months at ASD during which his 26 winners had him fourth in the jockeys' standings before deciding to return home. "Most of the owners shipped their horses to Lethbridge and Northlands Park in Edmonton," he explained. "Persons who normally give us rides lost their horses through claiming. There aren't many horses there. It's the same set of horses. Everything is alright, I just came home, plus the place was getting cold, especially when riding at nights," he said. The four-time Jamaican champion returned to the saddle at Caymanas Park on Wednesday and landed the seventh event with 2-1 chance PRIEST KING after favourite MIDNIGHT LAUNCH broke down while leading inside the last furlong. |
