Maragh off mark at Belmont Park |

JAMAICAN jockey Rajiv Maragh won aboard MY CARA MIA on Belmont Park's opening day in Elmont, New York, last week Friday, and returned with a double on Sunday - MISS CHATELAINE and RAGLIN RIVER in an allowance event.
Up to Thursday, Maragh was joint sixth, on three winners, in the Fall Meet standings being led by Javier Castellano's 10 wins, followed by Joel Rosario, 9, and Cornelius Velasquez, 6. Belmont's Fall Championship Meet will run for 38 days, up to October 26, before New York racing moves to Aqueduct October 29. The New York Racing Association stages racing at three tracks - Aqueduct, Saratoga and Belmont Park. Maragh is coming off a fruitful Saratoga meet, having finished sixth upstate New York on 21 wins from 162 starts. His mounts earned US$2.8m as he enjoyed a 13 per cent win ratio. The Jamaican had 68 top-three finishes at Saratoga, averaging 42 per cent in the money, behind Javier Castellano's 58, Irad Ortiz Jr 53, John Velazquez 38, Joel Rosario 33, and Jose Ortiz 31. He had finished 10th in Belmont's Spring/Summer meet with 23 wins from 170 starts before racing moved to Saratoga. His mounts earned US$1.77m. He enjoyed a 14 per cent win ratio and had 77 top-three finishes for 45 per cent in the money. |
