Bovell takes the gold in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, (CMC):

Top Trinidad and Tobago swimmer George Bovell claimed gold in the men's 100m individual medley at the second leg of the Fina/Mastbank Swimming World Cup in Dubai on the weekend.

A four-time Olympian, Bovell touched the wall in 51.79 seconds to take the top spot and later secure silver in the men's 50m freestyle.

He scraped into the final of the 50m after he and his training partner, Miguel Ozeki, both tied for the eighth and final qualifying berth with an identical time of 21.95 seconds in the heats.

However, Bovell advanced to the final after Ozeki withdrew from the "swim-off" to focus on another event.

Swimming out of lane eight in the final, Bovell clocked 21.31 seconds to take second behind the USA'xs Josh Schneider, who touched the wall in 21.11 seconds.

The Trinidadian swimmer also finished behind Schneider in the 50m freestyle final at the first leg of the World Cup series in Doha, Qatar, last week.
