Deejay jailed for rape

To be deported after serving sentence

André Williams, STAR Writer

A well-known Jamaican DJ is now facing deportation from Canada after being sentenced yesterday to six-and-a-half years for raping a severely drunk, cancer patient, who passed out in the back of a car, THE STAR understands.

Information reaching our news team is that the victim, before her dreadful ordeal, had undergone surgery for cervical cancer and while considering the harsh reality, she told prosecutors she would never heal.

According to www.edmontonsun.com, Haldane Raynor, who performed in clubs as DJ Capone, was handed a six-and-a-half-year sentence after earlier pleading guilty to sexual assault causing bodily harm.

"This was a major sexual assault," said Court of Queen's Bench Justice Dawn Pentelechuk, noting 'significant' harm occurred. "She was completely incapacitated and intoxicated and Mr Raynor took advantage of her state."

The judge also noted Raynor, 29, had launched an unsuccessful bid to have his guilty plea struck. She said that 'eroded' the mitigation of his plea and she no longer accepted he was remorseful for what he did.

THE STAR gathered that after pleading guilty on March 14, Raynor did a complete about-face.

Being black

He claimed he did it 'out of fear' he would face a lengthy prison term if convicted after a trial, and that he would not get a fair trial as a result of being black and having experienced racial prejudice.

Raynor also argued the agreed statement of facts he signed was not true, nor was his apology letter and support letters, and he suggested the victim had consented to having sex.

The Crown prosecution contemplated handing down a seven to nine-year prison sentence, calling the sex attack a "cold, calculated and predatory offence."

According to court documents, the victim and her boyfriend met Raynor at a downtown bar in the early morning of December 11, 2011, after attending a Christmas party.

Severely intoxicated

Allegations are that they then went to a nightclub for several hours before driving to a restaurant. By that point, the victim was 'severely intoxicated to the point of incapacity' and unable to walk, and she passed out in the back seat.

Raynor, who was intoxicated, and the boyfriend, who was sober, went to eat and Raynor finished first.

THE STAR understands that Raynor tricked the boyfriend into obtaining his keys and drove to another location and then got into the back seat and raped the victim, who was in and out of consciousness during the sexual assault.

According to the court, the victim was under medical supervision at the time of the incident and had been told that she was not to have any sex for a period of five to six weeks.

She tearfully read out a victim impact statement, saying she suffered extreme anxiety, lost her trust in people and thinks about the attack every night.

The court also heard that Raynor, who has permanent resident status in Canada, will likely be deported to Jamaica, where he was born, after serving his sentence.
