Home economics is important - teacher calls for equal recognition

There are a number of skilled practitioners who are unhappy about the kind of recognition being given to their area of expertise by the public. One such individual is Christine Powell, a home economics teacher at Dinthill Technical High School in Linstead, St Catherine.

"Home economics is important because you learn valuable skills. It also teaches you to be independent, self-reliant, and allows you to start your own business," she posited.

Powell also informed The Star that a number of the graduates from her institution go on to attend the Runaway Bay Heart Academy where they are trained in several aspects of hotel management.

Equal treatment

Powell teaches food and nutrition, home economics and clothing and textiles to grade-seven students, and home management and restaurant services to grade-nine students.

She holds a diploma and a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Mico Teachers' College and the University of Technology, respectively.

She previously taught at Lluidas Vale All-Age School before joining the staff at her present institution on September 1, 2008.

She is calling on the public to treat practical areas like home economics as they would the 'academic' subjects.
