Artiste launches 'Best Babyfather' campaign

Shaka Pow

Dancehall artiste Dr Garth McDonald, known by the stage name Shaka Pow, will be launching a 'Best Babyfather' campaign in an attempt to raise awareness of the importance of fathers playing a role in the lives of their children.

The campaign targets young fathers (16 - 30) and is aimed at providing guidance, so that the percentage of single parent families can be reduced.

"It's time for some of us who understand what it means to be a good father to inspire young men who need the guidance and support to get there and be good fathers. It's not a hard thing, yet here in Jamaica, we have several fatherless families and many youth are struggling just to figure out how to be a man, much more a father. So my hope with this campaign is to bridge the gap," the deejay said.

He called on some of the fathers in Dancehall/Reggae music such as Fada Wee Pow, Bugle, Mr G, Quick Cook, Big Wayne, Hollow Point, DJ Nerro among others, to take part in the campaign and in the process, show members of the public that they are leading by example.

"With the assistance of Smokin Acez Media Consultants, I have begun the process to make the best babyfather campaign an official NPO (nonprofit organisation). I will also reach out to organisations like The Jamaica Fathers Project, which has been leading the fight on this cause for some time now. If I can use my fame and the fame of my celebrity friends to bring awareness to a cause that's dear to my heart, then I'm all in," the deejay said.

Smokin Acez Media CEO, Debbion 'Debbie Debz' Smith, also spoke highly of the campaign.

"We applaud Dr. McDonald aka Shaka Pow for taking such a firm public stance on the issue of fatherhood. He made his call to his celebrity friends and we were impressed by the turnout, and we look forward to a great campaign," She said.

The official launch of the campaign will be on August 28. Shaka Pow will also unveil his newest video, a remake of Shabba Ranks' Best Babyfather. The single will be the theme song for the campaign.
