Glenmuir take inaugural Knox Cup

Glenmuir won the inaugural Knox Cup, a four-team pre-schoolboy tournament at Brooks Park in Mandeville, which ended on Thursday.

Glenmuir edged out Knox, the host and organisers of the tournament, on a 'most shots on target' rule after both teams secured two wins each over the two days of competition. Pre-arranged competition rules included the shots on target element to separate teams, which ended on the same points.

Glenmuir kicked off the competition on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Muschette High of Trelawny. The Clarendon team were then beaten 1-3 by Kingston College, but rallied to defeat Knox 2-0 on the final afternoon, to secure the Clifton 'Dove' Williams trophy.

Coach Warren Simpson, who has begun a new era with the three-time daCosta Cup champions, following the exit of iconic former coach Patrick 'Jackie' Walters after a productive 10-year stint, says the win will motivate his team to strive for at least a top-four placing this season.

"I believe they realise they can be a force to be reckoned with this season. It was also good for team pride as we rebrand Glenmuir," he added.

Simpson, who served as assistant during the Walters era, is in his second year, fully in charge of the team and is hoping for a solid season.

"We are hoping to be there for the final four," Simpson said.

It was also a good outing for Knox, a team who failed to even reach the inter-zone last season. The team, which is now coached by Courtney Jackson, secured two wins after defeating both Muschette and Kingston College by a 1-0 margin.

Kingston College, who drew with Muschette 1-1, ended on four points. According to their coach Lenny Hyde Sr, the tournament provided their first set of practice games and he was satisfied and had seen enough to be positive.

"It was a good prep for the team. It was good in that we got to look at our weaknesses and there were a couple of players who put on a good showing," Hyde Sr said.

Individual awards were handed out following the final game between Knox and Glenmuir. The Best Defender Award went to Jazeel Thompson of Kingston College, while Glenmuir's Recardo Dennis was adjudged the best midfielder. Despite his team earning just one point, David Swaby of Muschette was declared the best goalkeeper, while Hogart Henry of Knox won the Most Valuable Player award. The Top Goalscorer Award was shared between Kingston College's Jerome Coombs and Glemuir's David Givans.
