Captain of the Antigua Hawksbills, Jamaican Marlon Samuels, believes his team still has what it takes to rise from their second-to-last placing standing in the points table and qualify for the semi-finals of the Limacol-sponsored Caribbean Premier League Twenty20. The Hawksbills, who also have in their line-up Jamaicans Sheldon Cottrell, Danza Hyatt and Shacaya Thomas, are yet to record a point after five games. This is with four matches remaining in the first round of the six-team tournament. The Hawksbills are down to face third-place outfit Jamaica Tallawahs at Sabina Park tomorrow. The Tallawahs with a record of three wins and a loss - have six points, two less than second-place Guyana Amazon Warriors, who have a win-four, two-loss record from six games. Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel lead the standings with 10 points (five wins and a loss) in six outings. "Things have not gone as well as we would have liked, but we still have a chance of making it to the semi-finals and intend to give it our best shot," said Samuels. "We have been playing well in patches, but not consistent enough to get the desired result. We will, therefore, need to step up in all departments; hopefully, starting with the match against the Tallawahs." The Hawksbills, who have three Australians - big-hitting opener Ben Dunk, batsman David Hussey, and left-arm wrist spinner Brad Hogg - in their squad, went down to a one-wicket defeat with two balls remaining at the hands of Barbados Tridents at Kensington Oval, Barbados, in their last encounter. The Tallawahs, meanwhile, are coming off a 13-run loss to the Red Steel at Queen's Park Oval, Trinidad, also at the weekend. |
