Commonwealth Games significant, says Grevemberg

GLASGOW, Scotland:

Commonwealth Games CEO, David Grevemberg, hailed the impact of the participation of star athletes such as Jamaica's Usain Bolt as 'larger than life', and promised to deliver the best Commonwealth Games in history, two days before the start of the event.

Grevemberg also dismissed the notion that the multidisciplined event, contested primarily between former members of the British Empire, lacks in appeal and lustre, arguing that the Commonwealth Games and movement are both significant on the global scale.

Bolt, who has won back-to-back Olympic titles in the 100m and 200m, and is also the holder of the world record in both events, is set to make his first appearance at the Commonwealth Games with a leg on Jamaica's 4x100m relay team, something Grevemberg expects will help to raise the anticipation around the July 23-August 3 event.

When asked about the boost given from Bolt's expected participation, Grevemberg exclaimed: "It's larger than life!"

"The personalities of the Commonwealth; there were 179 medallists from Commonwealth nations at the Olympic Games in London 2012. Equally impressive at the Paralympics as well, and to be able to run a Commonwealth Games, where the Commonwealth's best athletes are competing, and being a part of this family and making that mean something, I really feel that we are putting the game on a new level, on a new platform," he added.

"I would like to call it a launch pad, which will take off from Glasgow and continue to carry the Commonwealth Games going forward," Grevemberg said.
