Henry glad to be back in badminton

Badminton siblings Gareth and Geordine Henry.

Almost 10 years ago, Geordine Henry gave up on badminton. With university studies being her focus, she simply didn't have time or motivation for it back then.

It wasn't until about two-and-a-half years ago that the now 25-year-old decided to give it a go once again.

Now, she's a few days away from bowing into action at the 2014 Commonwealth Games here, buoyed by the challenging road of her return, but determined to make the effort count.

Only once has a Jamaican woman progressed to the quarter-finals in singles badminton competition at the Commonwealth Games, and that was way back in 1966, when backed by home crowd support, Christine Bennett achieved what remains Jamaica's best showing in the event.

In fact, at the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi, all three Jamaican women failed to win a game in women's singles competition.

Still, Henry, the older sister, mixed doubled partner of Gareth, who is also here representing Jamaica in badminton and who finished in the round of 16 at the last tournament, has worked too hard to be concerned about all that.

"It was really hard coming back, you have some very good juniors that are also very fit, so you actually have to put in twice as much as them because I had to play catch-up. I am also working as well, so that makes it even harder because you work 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and after that you train until 11 p.m. or so, so it was extremely difficult," she said.

"I'm excited to actually make the team because I have been training hard for a couple of years, and this was the goal. So I'm just looking forward to going there and doing my best," added Henry, before explaining her decision to quit several years ago.

"I stopped because after a while, you feel burnt out, you feel like it's taking up all of your time, and I was at university and I didn't think it was worth it to be sacrificing the schoolwork for the badminton, because as you know, we don't really get much perks, so I just had to make a decision," Henry said.

Badminton competition starts on July 24 with mixed teams action at the Emirates Arena.
