( L - R ) Nesta Carter, Fraser-Pryce

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Nesta Carter were both beaten over 100 metres at the Sainsbury Anniversary Games in London yesterday.

Carter, the fifth fastest man in history, has been having a sub-par season by his usual standards having broken 10-second legally just once this season. His struggles continued yesterday as he finished third in 10-seconds flat in a race was won by American Mike Rogers, who ran a season-best 9.91s. Rogers finished ahead of an evergreen Kim Collins who was timed in 9.96s, a new St Kitts national record. The 38-year-old Collins has been living in Jamaica for about two years now after falling out with the St Kitts Athletics Association.

Fraser-Pryce has been improving her times over the short sprint with each meet since recovering from shin splints. but she won't have a point of reference from her 100-metre run where she finished second to a fast-finishing Alyson Felix. The timer malfunctioned so no marks were recorded for the race in which Carmelita Jeter, competing in her first major race since taking a protracted absence from competitive racing, finished third.

Aleen Bailey did get a time, 11.74s for her fourth-place finish in the women's B 100 metres won by Great Britain's Margaret Adeoye in 11.61. Her countrywoman, Sophie Papps was second in 11.69, just ahead of the USA's Bianca Knight 11.70.

Blanka Vlasic continues to improve after missing last season because of surgery. She hit the 2-metre mark in the high jump for the first time this season to get the better of Spain's Ruth Beitia 1.96m and American record holder Chaunte Lowe 1.93m.

In the men's equivalent there was no Bohdan Bondarenko or Mutaz Essa Barshim so that may have accounted for the relative lack of intensity in Sainsbury. There was still some amount of drama, however, as Canada's Derek Drouin won a close battle over the USA's Erik Kynard. Both cleared 2.32m, with Drouin winning on the count back. Italy's Marco Fassinotti was third in 2.25m.

The same could not be said for the men's shot put, however, as David Storl won with a personal best mark of 21.79m. Joe Kovacs of the USA was second with a mark of 21.44m, while Kurt Roberts (21.06m) was third.
