22 athletes not registered for Commonwealth Games

André Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter

Four days away from the opening ceremony, some 22 members of Jamaica's track and field team to the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, have yet to be registered for their respective events, as Jamaican officials and the organisers of the multi-discipline event grapple to find a solution in time.

With start names such as Usain Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Warren Weir in the ranks, Jamaica boasts what is seen as perhaps its most powerful athletics team assembled for the Commonwealth Games.

hiccups in registration

However, hiccups in the registration process, caused primarily by the fact that Jamaica's National Senior Championships, which served as a trial for the event, was staged beyond the original deadline date for entries to the Commonwealth Games.

The Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) along with several other National Olympic Associations, who now find themselves in a similar situation, were, however, granted an extended deadline for final submission of track and field entries. But, while those deadlines were met according to JOA secretary general Christopher Samuda, it was the process of registering the athletes and the limited time, that is causing the issues.

accreditation not an issue

"So accreditation is not really the issue. You know that you have to submit first a long list of all the athletes and then you await your national trials to see specifically who are the athletes who are going to go forward and I think the issue arose at that stage," Samuda, when contacted last night.

"There was a difficulty because our national trials was way down and in fact we had to get an extension to facilitate the results of our trials, so I think the difficulty was there and not necessarily with the actual accreditations," he added.

"My understanding is that accreditation is fine, its just in relation to the sport entries, which speaks to the final list of athletes who will actually represent the country in the respective events," he noted.

Still Samuda is optimistic that the matter will be settled at a scheduled meeting of the organising committee over the next 48 hours.

Sixty-seven track and field athletes were named to Jamaica's team to the Commonwealth Games.
