Jamaica coach Oral Simpson has put bettering team's performances over the last two seasons as the main objective heading into next Tuesday's start of the West Indies Under-15 Championship. Champions in 2011, under former Jamaica senior team captain Terrence Corke, Jamaica could only manage fifth place finishes in the six-team tournament in 2012 and 2013. "The aim is to improve on our performances over the last two seasons," said Simpson, who is in his first stint with the team. "This is especially so since we have been given the chance to host the season for yet another year. "When you are in your own backyard it should count for something." Jamaica, who were coached by Carl Brissett last season, failed to impress when the tournament was held in St Elizabeth. Of that team, however, four of the players have returned, which according to Simpson, means that "there is a platform" on which the team can build. The four players are batsmen, Dominik Samuels of Campion College, Raewin Senior of Excelsior and Kirk McKenzie of St George's, and wicketkeeper Ricardon McIntosh of Clarendon College. A reserve from last year, batsman Andre McCathy, is also apart of the unit. "Our chances are as good as any," alluded Simpson. "It is a hard working and confident group, who are willing to learn, and if they show the right application they should do well." The Jamaicans will open their campaign against Barbados at Up Park in the opening round, with defending champions Trinidad and Tobago taking on Windward Islands at Kensington Park. The Leeward Islands and Guyana will meet in the other encounter. |
