'I've a gut feeling the child isn't mine' - Man requests paternity test
Diandra Grandison, Staff Reporter

Twenty-four-year-old Jeremiah Hernandezis hoping that a DNA test can disprove his 'gut feeling' about the paternity of 19-year-old Gillian Bennett'snine-month-old daughter.

The pair, who is from Mandeville, Manchester, met through family members about two years ago and an intimate relationship developed. About eight months into their relationship, Bennett became pregnant and this was when things became sour.

Hernandez told THE STAR that based on his calculations, Bennett's daughter could not be his because the date she gave birth did not match the time period they last engaged in sexual intercourse.

Hernandez: "Baby tek nine months. My calculations of when she is to conceive was January 5, but she wasn't in Mandeville at that time and we didn't have sex before that in December because she was having her menses. I had sex with her on the 28th of January on my birthday, and the baby born September 28."

Hernandez says his doubts were further fuelled when a doctor allegedly inquired about the child's paternity.

Hernandez: "When she (the baby) was three months old she was sick and I took her to the paediatrician and the doctor asked me, 'Are you the child's father?' and I told her 'yes!', and she looked at me and said, 'hmmm! Are you sure?'"

He went on to state that he also received information about Bennett's alleged infidelities before and after she gave birth.

But Bennett refuted Hernandez's allegations stating that it was the jealousy of a former friend who planted the seed of doubt in her lover's mind.

Bennett: "It was a girl that was my friend that liked him and told him that it was not his, that it was for my ex that was before him. So from there the doubt went, he asked me and I told him it's not true, and that he could do a DNA test when the baby is born."

But despite the doubts, the pair is still in a relationship.

Bennett told THE STAR that her daughter is also registered in Hernandez's name.

THE STAR asked about the resemblance of the child.

Hernandez: "The baby doesn't look anything like me, the baby lighter than her mom and I am dark complexion. We have strong genes in my family, all of us resemble each other and she doesn't resemble me or anyone in my family and I find that very odd."

Bennett: "She resembles both parents, but resembles mainly me. She has his head, dimple, nose and mouth and the top of his forehead and she even walks like him."

When asked what they would like the outcome of the result to state, the pair responded.

Hernandez: "Me grow fi love the little baby, but I have this feeling in my gut that she's not mine and whenever I have these feelings I'm usually right, but I am hoping the result will say is my child."

Bennett: "I want it to say that it is his, I have no doubts about it."

THE STAR also asked what would happen if the result should prove that Hernandez is not the father.

Hernandez: "I can't say what would happen, that I don't know, but I think we won't be together anymore."

Bennett: "I dunno."
