Freshly-minted 110m hurdles national record holder Hansle Parchment continued his winning ways, long-striding his way to a close win over Cuban Orlando Ortega at the international meeting Montreuil-sous-Bois, in France yesterday. Parchment, who became the first Jamaican to dip below 13 seconds, and the joint 10th-fastest man in the history of the event, with a 12.94 scorcher at the Paris Diamond League on Saturday, made it five wins in eight starts in the Parisian suburb, clocking 13.33 in a slight headwind. Certainly not short on confidence these days, the big Jamaican has only finished outside the top three once this season. Quite a return for a man who lost most of 2013 due to an ankle injury obtained while warming up to compete at last year's National Senior Championships. Ortega kept in touch with a time of 13.38, the same as local and 2013 World Championships finalist Thomas Martinot Lagarde, the older brother of current Diamond Race leader Pascal. Parchment was the only winning Jamaican on the day at the low-keyed meet. Carrie Russell, 11.41, ran second in the 100m behind hotshot Trinidadian Michelle Lee Ahye, 11.32, with Marie Jose Ta Lou from Côte d'Ivoire running third in 11.58. Christine Day could only manage a 52.12 clocking - good enough for fourth place in the 400m, which was won by Sanya Richards-Ross in 51.12, as Olha Zemlyak, 51.52 and Natasha Hastings, 52.11 completing the top three. It was even a rougher day for Damar Forbes in the long jump pit as his best of 7.16m left him down in 10th spot with Spain's Eusabio Caceres taking the win in 7.91m. |
