President of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) , Mike Fennell, is looking forward to a positive showing at this month's Commonwealth Games and expects the inclusion of sprinting superstars Usain Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to the country's track and field team to raise the level of excitement.
The trio were named to Jamaica's 67 member athletics team, with the country set to be represented in 10 additional sports: Badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, netball, shooting, squash, swimming/diving, table tennis and triathlon at the July 23-August 3 event.
"Some of them (athletes) are not in a condition to run individual events, and so they are listed for relay events, but they wanted to be a part of this very important sports movement. It's a wonderful Games, and I think everyone will enjoy it," Fennell said.
"I think they will give Jamaica another boost in terms of a country and representation."
Thirty-four females including Kerron Stewart, Novlene Williams-Mills, Stephenie-Ann McPherson, Kaliese Spencer, Kimberly Williams and 33 males with the likes of Nickel Ashmeade, Kemar Bailey-Cole, Warren Weir, Hansle Parchment, Odayne Richards and Andrew Riley will lead the island's track and field representation.
Overall, 159 athletes will don the national colours and Fennell is happy with the work that has gone into pulling the teams together.
"We have worked very hard with the teams in the planning process since last year and have been having a series of meetings month by month and getting everybody together," Fennell said at a media briefing at the Jamaica Pegasus yesterday. "We have put a lot of effort in putting this team together and it's a good team. We are really looking forward to it."
