Walker's agent says Prado erred

Omar Walker - File

GARFIELD 'Glasses' Reid, the vociferous local agent of Omar Walker, is already talking up his rider's return to Caymanas Park for tomorrow's Jamaica St Leger in which the four-time champion jockey will be reunited with 2000 Guineas and Governor's Cup winner, TALENTED TONY K.

Reid, who handled Walker's book for most of his career, during which he won four consecutive titles, 2007-2010, said his former client, is "coming to ride a winner" after landing a double at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Canada, yesterday.

The agent was scathing in commenting on American Hall of Famer Edgar Prado's handling of TALENTED TONY K in the June 14 Derby, which the speedy colt lost to Anthony Nunes' stayer, RELAMPAGO, with Shane Ellis aboard.

"We spoke about the Derby and he is coming to ride a winner. I don't think they are in the same class," Reid said.

"The jockey rode a poor race. He had the fastest horse in the race and at no stage did the field feel his pace," he added.

Walker had booted home TALENTED TONY K to a seven-length victory over RELAMPAGO in April's 2000 Guineas but was away in Canada and missed the May 24 Governor's Cup, which Ellis narrowly won aboard the speedy colt, beating RELAMPAGO.

American Hall of Famer Edgar Prado partnered TALENTED TONY K in the June 14 Derby. Walker was booked by the owner for the Derby but declined the ride after controversy emerged with trainer Lorne Kirlew naming Ellis as his preferred rider.

Reid said nobody questioned Prado's tactics of waiting with TALENTED TONY K, instead of trying to slip the field at some point, as Walker and Ellis had done in the Guineas and Governor's Cup, respectively.

"RELAMPAGO had it too easy. BARS OF GOLD in front of TALENTED TONY K? If it was a Jamaican jockey, you wouldn't have heard the end of it. Because Prado is from a First World country, it's RELAMPAGO who was the better horse," Reid said mockingly.

"He can't beat TALENTED TONY K. He went by at the top of the lane and only won by three lengths, going 12 furlongs, beating a horse that, as they claimed, cannot stay," he pointed out.
