Coach of Jamaica national senior women's football team, Merron Gordon, is looking to strengthen the squad with more professional players ahead of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) final-phase qualifiers for the 2015 World Cup. Jamaica advanced following easy victories against St Lucia (14-0) and Dominican Republic (7-0) at the Estadio Panamericano in Dominican Republic last weekend. Now, Jamaica is among eight Caribbean teams that will battle for spots in the CONCACAF stage. The CFU final phase is to be held in Trinidad and Tobago, August 19-26. "Well, the St Lucia game was the easier of the two matches, as it was a bit difficult against hosts Dominican Republic," Gordon told STAR Sports. Looking ahead, Gordon pointed out that Haiti should be Jamaica's biggest threat in the group. "They had been playing as a unit in a semi-professional league for the past two years and we have done some preliminary research on them," the Reggae Girls head coach explained. For the next stage, the eight qualifiers will be divided into two groups of four teams each. The top two teams will advance to the semi-final round. The finalists and the third place team, will advance to the CONCACAF stage. "I am very confident but humble. We need to add some more professional players, so we'll look at some that have shown interest from England," Gordon said. "We will spend more time in the gym in preparation to get stronger. The plan is also to continue playing against local boys, if we can't get international games," the coach added. |
