A St Andrew resident who is being accused of selling a car that is believed to have being cloned was granted bail when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

He is Neil Fearon, a 28-year-old labourer. When Fearon appeared before Resident Magistrate Natalee Brooks, it was revealed that the charges of possession of criminal property and engaging in criminal property were brought against him.

Clerk of Court Nicole Kellier said in light of new evidence, the Crown intends to change the charges against the accused, who has been in custody for more than a month.

She asked that he be further remanded for the formal charges to be laid, but defence attorney Vincent Wellesley vigorusly opposed it.

''We cannot have that, what the clerk is saying amounts to malicious prosecution and false imprisonment.

We must deal with the law and not emotion. We must not just lock up because police say so, my client has nothing to hide and is a candidate for bail,'' Wellesley said.

Bail was subsequently granted in the sum of $100,000. He returns to court on August 13.

Allegations are that a 1998 Honda Torneo motor car was stolen and the documents cloned. The car and the cloned documents were later sold to an unsuspecting individual, who allegedly sold it to Fearon, who sold it to another man.

Investigation by the Flying Squad led to Fearon been charged. He has denied any wrongdoing and produced receipts to the court for payments made to the man he bought the car from.
