A St Andrew resident, accused of selling a car that is believed to have been cloned, was granted bail when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Neil Fearon, a 28-year-old labourer is charged with possession of criminal property and engaging in criminal property.

Clerk of Court Nicole Kellier told the court, that in light of new evidence, the crown intend to change the charges against the accused, who has been in custody for more than a month.

She asked that he be further remanded for formal charges to be laid. However, defence attorney Vincent Wellesley vigorously opposed.

''We cannot have that. what the clerk is saying amounts to malicious prosecution and false imprisonment. We must deal

with the law and not emotions. We must not just lock up because police say so. My client has nothing to hide and is a candidate for bail,'' Wellesley said.

Bail was granted in the sum of $100,000. Fearon is to reappear August 13 when the matter will again be mentioned.

Allegations are that the documents for a 1998 Honda Torneo motor car was lost. These documents were cloned and a man said he had bought a similar motor vehicle from another man, who said he had acquired the papers from Fearon.

Investigations by the Flying Squad led to Fearon being charged. He has denied any wrongdoing and produced receipts to the court for payments made.
