Three wins for Carib athletes

Caribbean athletes registered three wins at the NCAA Division 1 outdoor track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon last weekend.

There were wins for Jamaica's Remona Burchell and Shanieka Thomas and Trinidad and Tobago's Deon Lendore.

Burchell, former Herbert Morrison High athlete, competing for the University of Alabama, clocked 11.25 seconds to win the 100 metres despite running against a 3.5 metres per second wind. Marolake Atkinson (11.33) from the University of Texas and Janna Prandini(11.42) of the University of Oregon were second and third respectively.

Triple jumper Thomas, a past student of Vere Technical, ended her final competition for San Diego State University in fine style with a winning mark of 14.00m to turn back LaQue Moen Davis (13.56m) of Texas A&M and Clara Brewer (13.47m) of the University of Florida.

Trinidad's Lendore of Texas A&M had a close victory over Mile Berry of the University of Oregon in the 400m. Lendore clocked 45.02, Berry 45.07 while Vernon Norwood of Louisiana State University was third in 45.45.

Friday's third day of competition was highlighted by a world junior record. American Treyvan Bromwell clocked 9.97 seconds to become the first junior athlete to go under 10 seconds for 100m.
