Cedella Marley - file Jamaica's senior women's team took another step on their journey to the FIFA Women's World Cup yesterday when they departed Florida for the Dominica Republic where they will start the competitive stage of the journey. Jamaica are drawn in Group 5 of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women's Caribbean Cup and will play against St Lucia on June 20 and the hosts Dominica Republic on June 22 before returning home on June 23. The team has spent the last 14 days in a training camp at the St Thomas University in Florida. The camp was organised by Cedella Marley, JFF appointed global ambassador for Jamaica's women's football teams. It was fully funded by donations that Marley has received through a number of initiatives undertaken by her team. Coach Merron Gordon has described the camp as a 'resounding success' especially as it allowed for the development of camaraderie among the players and strengthened their knowledge of each other's contribution on the field of play. During the camp, the girls were able to undergo a thorough physical test organised by the ambassador and her team as well as play two practice matches both of which which they won convincingly. Gordon reports that in the first week the technical staff concentrated on physical and technical preparation and in the second tactical awareness. They were also able to address weaknesses identified in the first game. |
