Gayle blasts Jamaican government

Chris Gayle - file

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has delivered an open tirade at the Jamaican government. Speaking at the launch of the Jamaican leg of his cricket academy at Lucas Cricket Club yesterday, Gayle said he was disappointed at how respective governments have treated him in more ways than one.

He said as someone who has carried the flag of Jamaica high around the region and the world, not once has the government sought to recognise his efforts.

The big-left hander, who has the enviable distinction of being one of two West Indians, and four batsmen overall in the history of Test cricket, also said he has asked the government twice to grant a favour, and on both occasions he was turned down.

"I have done so much for this country as a sporting ambassador. So much for hospitals here, so much for schools etc, and I ask my country twice for a favour and not once did they say yes," said Gayle.

not done much

This is across respective governments, and I must say I am very disappointed.

"I (also) remember another cricketer, Laurie Williams, also asked the government once for a favour, and he died and did not get it.

"(And) I have seen other people, who have not done much, or anything at all for the country, getting a lot of privilege.

"I have paid my taxes, millions, to be exact. I will never ask you (the government) for nothing again.

"I have been turned down twice and I won't give you a third chance to turn me down again."

Gayle, who is set to play his 100th Test for West Indies on Sunday at Sabina Park, in the meantime, said despite his disappointments, he intends to continue flying the country's flag high.

"I will still fight for my country, right throughout, through thick and thin," he said.

The 34-year-old, who is one of the most recognisable figures in world cricket, owns several sports business locally, including a sports bar in New Kingston, and a sports goods store.

The government, among other things, on a yearly basis, honours outstanding sports personnel for their service to country with a varying number of national awards.
