Mayor of Spanish Town Norman Scott took the police to task for their non-performance on the streets of the Old Capital, where traffic control is concerned.

Scott, speaking at the dedication ceremony for the opening of a mobile police station in Lime Tree, St Catherine, made the observation and asked that police commissioner Owen Ellington send a team of ''dedicated'' personnel to the capital.

''We at the St Catherine Parish Council have spent millions of dollars to build bus parks, and yet, the indisciplined operators keep crowding the streets. This makes Spanish Town a congested place, so we need help to deal with the issue,'' Scott said.

He told the audience that the Old Capital is in need of police personnel to help the municipal police in dealing with the indisciplined public passenger vehicle operators. Meanwhile, Ellington promised to take the mayor's concern and deal with it in the best possible way.

The station, a 40-foot container, is equipped with an air-conditioning unit, beds and other facilities to accommodate several police personnel. It is the second to be officially opened in St Catherine following the opening of another on March Pen Road six months ago.
