Wolmer's Boys' School stayed on course for their first hold on the McKay Security Jamaica Taekwondo High School League trophy, defeating champions Calabar in the final of the high-school division at the recent Ningen Open at the University of Technology. It was Wolmer's second straight high-school league victory, after beating Jamaica College in the final of the Jamaica Taekwondo Open in April. The Heroes Circle boys now have two wins in four tournaments, leading Calabar and St George's. Calabar won the season opener, the Jamaica Superstars Martial Arts Open, on February 22. St George's lifted the second title at March's Shai-Tai Open. Jermaine Lue, who coaches Calabar and KC, said Wolmer's will be a tough team to deny the title this season. "Wolmer's have a strong team, a lot of fifth formers. So look for them winning more tournaments. Most of the Calabar team members are fourth formers, so there's an age difference, and Calabar might be intimidated by size. In addition, a lot of the Calabar guys, they don't compete anymore," Lue pointed out. Advanced to the final Wolmer's advanced to the final by getting past Jamaica College. Calabar got the better of Kingston College, avenging their defeat at the Jamaica Taekwondo Open. Kingston College won the third-place fight-off against Jamaica College. Four tournaments are left to decide the title, the Mandeville Taekwondo Open, Zendo, Seido, and Jamaica Taekwondo Academy opens. Lue said the tide could change, especially after the students complete external examinations. "We have quite a few before the season ends, so there is still time for Calabar to recover," Lue assured. |
