Tsetsi 'Lights Out' Davis, who is the No. 3-seeded boxer in the Wray and Nephew Welterweight Contender 2014 series, earned himself a place in the semi-finals for the second straight year, with a convincing victory on points last Wednesday night, over unseeded Ramel 'Sub Zero' Lewis, at the Chinese Benevolent Association auditorium on Old Hope Road.

Davis dominated the fight from the opening bell, and used a mixture of methodical jabs, searing hooks to the body and head, and jarring uppercuts to take a unanimous decision. Judge Clifford Brown scored it 60-53, while judges Lindell Allen and Keith Brown had identical scores of 60-54.

Both men met in the semi-finals of the 'Contender' series on June 5, 2013 over eight rounds, and on that occasion, Davis also came out the winner on points. Last Wednesday he was as well prepared in every way, and did not allow Lewis to win even one round.

In the early stages of the contest, he used his jabs to good advantage in building up points, and whenever the action changed to close range, where Lewis was expected to do better, he used his defensive skills to nullify the punches thrown.

He also made Lewis miss a lot, and after three rounds it was clear, that to win, Lewis had to get lucky and catch his man with a surprise knockout punch. The cagey and careful Davis ensured that this did not happen, however, and it was basically smooth sailing throughout.

Lewis made himself an elusive target when the fight started, using angles to upset the rhythm of his opponent. This worked for only a short period of time however as Davis caught up with him and exploded near the end of the round with a two-fisted attack, to which Lewis could find no answer.

The second round saw Davis stepping up the pace. Lewis responded with a 'fire for fire' approach and there was some ferocious in-fighting. Davis scored at about a 3-1 ratio however. The third round was a thrilling and action-packed affair, and the standing room only crowd cheered wildly as both men scored with quality punches.
