Tallawahs picks highly recommended by coach, Gayle |

Mickey Arthur - File Courtney Walsh says it was a selection panel decision to pick Australia batsman Adam Voges and South Africa fast bowler Juan Rusty Theron during last week's Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 players draft. The Tallawahs selection panel is made up of Walsh; coach; Mickey Arthur; and captain, Chris Gayle. The 34-year-old Voges and Theron were selected as two of the team's three allowed international draft picks ahead of several other established international players. Some of the players who were not drafted include Sri Lankans Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan; South African Vernon Philander; and Pakistani Shaid Afridi. "When we were thinking as to who we wanted, and the roles we wanted players to play, those were the two names that came to the forefront as first picks," said Walsh. "They were recommended highly by the coach and the captain (Chris Gayle), who would have seen them in action, and are more in tune with the international cricket marketplace," he added. Voges, a top-order right-handed batsman, who also bowls part-time left-arm spin, has seven Twenty20 Internationals to his credit at an average of 46.33. This is at a strike rate of 121.92 and includes a top score of 51. He has, however, not found favour with Australia's selectors since February 2013. Theron, in the meanwhile, who, like Voges, has participated in other domestic Twenty20 Leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League, has represented South Africa in nine Twenty20s and four one-day internationals. He has taken 12 wickets in Twenty20 internationals at an average of 21.75 and has an economy rate of 8.07 runs per over. He, too, however, has been in and out of South Africa's team since making his debut, with his last Twenty20 occurring over two years ago. Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad are the other two Tallawahs international signings. Muralitharan was retained prior to the draft as the team's International Franchise Player, while Shehzad, who is also slated to make a return, was picked in the second round of the 13-round draft. Shehzad was selected for US$70,000; Voges, in the third round, for US$50,000; and Theron in the sixth round for US$20,000. The CPL is set to bowl off on July 5 and culminate in August.
Jamaica Tallawahs Squad: Chris Gayle, Muttiah Muralitharan, André Russell, Ahmed Shehzad, Adam Voges, Nikita Miller, Jerome Taylor, Juan Rusty Theron, Chadwick Walton, David Bernard Jr, Andrew Richardson, Carlton Baugh Jr, Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Odean Brown. |
