Hedge fights for CABOFE title tonight

Jamaica's Rudolph Hedge will challenge champion Dexter Marques from Guyana, for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) flyweight title in Guyana tonight. This will be the main bout on a five- fight card that will feature four Jamaicans.

The other Jamaicans on the card are Devon Moncriffe, Kemahl Russell and Toriano Nicholas. Hedge, who has a record of seven wins, one loss and three draws, has not been active locally for some time because of the difficulty of finding opponents in his weight class.

Before leaving Jamaica on Thursday, he said that he has been training hard for the past month, under the guidance of veteran trainer Job Walters and is well prepared and confident that he will take the title back to Jamaica with him. His opponent Marques has been champion since 2012, but this is his first title defence. He has however had several other fights since then, and has won them all. He has a 13-2 record.

In the semi-final, Moncriffe will go against veteran Mark Austin over eight rounds. Russell, who has only had one fight, which he won, will go against Romeo Norville in a four rounder. He made his pro debut last July with a victory over Jermaine Brown. Nicholas will be making his professional debut against Quincy Gomes, also over four rounds . He gave a good final performance as an amateur two weeks ago, when he defeated Daron Weir on points, on the undercard of the Contender show.
