CPL chief says floodlights in time for CPL a tough task

Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 chief executive officer Damien O'Donohoe has described plans by the government of Jamaica to have floodlights installed at Sabina Park for this year's tournament as a "tough task".

He, however, contends that given assurances by the Ministry of Sports, he is quietly confident that the project will be delivered.

"It is a tough task, but I am sure they will be able to deliver," said O'Donohoe.

"It's a tight timeline, but, the minister tells me that they are going to be working day and night."

Training

The CPL, which is entering its second season, is slated to start on July 5, with a series of training camps for the six franchise teams.

It is then slated to end in the middle of August, as was the case last season.

The Jamaica Tallawahs, the defending champions, utilised Sabina for both their training camps and home matches.

"It is a very, very big project and a lot of responsibilities on the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) to deliver," said Desmond Malcom, general manager of the UDC.

"We have about three months to put the lights in, which will consist of four unit poles and adequate lighting.

And, we have to complete this by the end of June as decisions will need to be made in respect of the CPL.

(But) we will have to deliver and we will have to step up to the challenge."

The installation of the floodlights was made possible as a result of a grant totalling US$2.1 million from the Indian government to the Jamaican government.
