Robert Bailey, Star Writer Kingston College's Anguillan Zharnel Hughes said breaking the Boys Class I 100m record at last night's ISSA/GraceKenndey Boys and Girls' Championships was just a bonus achievement. Hughes turned in a brilliant performance to smash the record on yesterday's fourth day, clocking 10.12 to win the event, in the process erasing the previous mark of 10.21, set by World Champion Yohan Blake as a St Jago schoolboy in 2007. Bog Walk's Jevaughn Minzie also dipped below the old mark and barley missed out on the gold, with a time of 10.16. Raheem Robinson of Wolmer's surprisingly took home the bronze in 10.37. "I was focusing on execution and on winning and not on the record but it came and I am happy," Hughes told Star Sports. "The race was a very exciting race for me," he added. It was indeed an exciting race as only superb late power from Hughes enabled him to overtake the quick-starting Minzie around 5 metres from the finish line. Triumphant return In the women's equivalent Christania Williams of Edwin Allen made a triumphant return from injury to claim the Class I 100m title in 11.19, with Wolmer's Jhonelle Smith (11.32) in second and Monique Spencer (11.46) in third. Shauna Helps sped to 11.80 to win the girls Class II 100m ahead of the St Jago pair of Natalliah Whyte, who was also credited with (11.80) and Shanice Reid (11.89). Defending champions Calabar lead the boys' standings with 67 points heading to today's final day of the championships. Calabar are followed by Jamaica College (55), KC (48.50), St Elizabeth Technical (36), Edwin Allen (28), Excelsior (23) and Holmwood (21). On the girls' side Edwin Allen lead with 131 points after 17 finals ahead of Hydel (106). The pair are followed by St Jago (80), Holmwood (68), Vere (41), Manchester (30) and Wolmer's (23). |
