Jamaica ready for World Indoor campaign

Nesta Carter - file

Jamaica begin its IAAF World Indoor Championships campaign tomorrow morning inside the Ergo Arena in Sopot, Poland, looking to better their two-medal return from the 2012 instalment of the championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Nesta Carter will line up in the 60m heat as he looks to secure safe passage in a bid to improve on the silver medal he won in Istanbul, with 11 other Jamaicans expected to compete on tomorrow's opening day of the three-day championships.

Patricia Hall returns to the indoors championships after a semi-final finish two years ago and will be joined in the women's 400m heats by debutante and 400m hurdles specialist Kaliese Spencer, who will walk into the Ergo Arena as the fifth-fastest woman this season, with a best of 51.39s - done outdoors.

A finalist the last time around, Olympian Kimberly Williams is the only Jamaican representative in the women's triple jump qualification round, while Odayne Richards will line up in the men's shot put qualifiers, with one eye on the final later in the afternoon session.

Only Trinidad and Tobago's Lalonde Gordon has gone faster than Edino Steele this season, and the Jamaican represents a solid medal prospect in the men's 400m, where he will be joined by Akheem Gauntlett in the heats.

Natoya Goule is the only Jamaican in the women's 800m, while Damar Forbes will be looking to continue his development in the heats of the men's long jump.

Also scheduled tomorrow are the semi-finals for the men's and women's 400m.
