Ex-England defender Campbell claims FA racism

LONDON (AP):

Former England defender Sol Campbell has accused England's Football Association of racism, claiming he would have captained England for more than a decade if he were white.

Campbell, who is black, made 73 international appearances but was only captain three times for friendly matches.

The former Tottenham and Arsenal player has authorised a biography being serialised in The Sunday Times newspaper, which includes the quote: "I believe if I was white, I would have been England captain for more than 10 years ... I think the FA wished I was white."

Campbell insists he had the "credibility, performance-wise to be captain."

There was no immediate response from the Football Association.
